Hello, everyone! I have decided to try to contribute some sort of health "tidbit" to each issue of the WG. I'm going to try and come up with something new each time that hopefully not everyone would know about yet. For the last issue, I got permission from the author and guided Donna to a link to the text of Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins talk on feline nutrition at the Winn Symposium at the CFA Annual last year.

(I hope everyone read that and is not still providing their cats with a diet of solely dry food.) For the next issue, I hope to be able to get the text of Dr. Susan Little's talk on the latest on FIP. For this issue, I am sharing with you an abstract that my vet now has printed on the bottom of all of her invoices as she feels it is that important. Sorry that I'm not providing the complete reference; my vet didn't include the journal info on her handout.

Sincerely, Cindy Stryker, Calumet Selkirk Rex

EVALUATION OF THE PASSAGE OF TABLETS AND CAPSULES THROUGH THE ESOPHAGUS IN CATS
BY DS WESTFALL, DC TWEDT, PF STEYN, EB OBERHAUSER, JW VANCLEAVE.

We have reported tablet induced focal esophagitis and esophageal stricture formation in cats secondary to doxycycline administration. The objective of this study was to evaluate the passage of tablets and capsules when given alone (dry swallow) and when followed by a water bolus (wet swallow).

Each cat was given a 20 mg barium tablet and a 190 mg (size 4) barium capsule both as a dry and a wet swallow. A wet swallow consisted of immediately following administration with 6 ml of water orally via syringe. A specially designed Plexiglass box was used to restrain the cats during the study. Fluoroscopy was utilized to evaluate tablet or capsule passage at 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, and 300 seconds following administration. The percentage of dry tablet swallows that successfully passed into the stomach was 0.0% at 30 and 60 seconds, 6.7% at 90 seconds, 13.3% at 120 seconds, 26.7% at 180 and 240 seconds, and 36.7% at 300 seconds. Wet tablet swallows successfully passed 90.0% of the time at 30 seconds, 93.3% at 60 seconds and 100% of the time thereafter. Based on this study, we recommend the routine administration of a water bolus to cats receiving oral tablets or capsules to prevent possible medication associated esophagitis.

***Dr. Rebecca Arnold instructs that after administration of any tablet or capsule, that you please follow with a syringe-full of water to ensure that it reaches the stomach and does not get lodged in the throat.***

TICA Information

By Debra Sutherland

I heard over and over that TICA is no comparison to CFA: Our cat counts aren't as high in some shows. This is not always true. It takes a final and five hundred points to become just a Champion. To me Championship is quite a bit harder in TICA.

I know friends that struggle at becoming a triple grand and may never make it to a supreme in this registry. To accomplish a Supreme in TICA is an honor.

To give an insight:
This is the road to Supreme for TICA. The Selkirk Rex that final in a ring usually have a Best of Color and a Best of Division that's 25 each then add your placement in the final for total points for that ring.

A novice is any cat shown for the first time after the age of 8 months. Points are cumulative from the cat's first entry as a novice. Points are cumulative; balance of points from a previous title are applied toward the next title.

For your information:

I was appointed by the board to be on the breed committee for the Selkirk Rex. As you know a third person was needed to make the committee official.

Several judges in TICA have asked me to help gain more membership of Selkirk Rex into this club. Please let any one that wants help or is thinking of showing in TICA that I am here to help.

TICA is making an effort not to schedule shows on the same day as the CFA so the show fanatics like me can go to both.

From November 2001 - not yet published anywhere.
Hi Group,

I just got back last night from the International and wanted to give a brief report. It was a wonderful show with many interesting people and fun events. Houston welcomed us with open arms. I will let Debi brag on Townie. I took 2-6 month old kittens, Spellbinding Cinco and Spellbinding Black Magic. Both weigh over 8 pounds and are handsome devils. They behaved very well in the rings- playing and being charming. Cinco took 4 rings and Magic took 2 so Cinco was the Best Selkirk kitten and Magic 2nd best. They didn't get any finals, but Darrell Newkirk took about 20 minutes trying to decide which one to make BOB. There was TONS of gate and lots of interest in our curly headed babes. It was great to introduce so many people to our breed. I only wish there had been more of us at the show. Next year, let's all make an effort to be there as ambassadors for our wonderful cats!

CFA Annual Awards Banquet

Attendees (L to R) Mary Jones, Dee Weymouth, Trish Simmes, Chele Aughenbaugh, and Sheri Lynn Henderson. Not pictured are Donna Bass and Debi Kallmeyer

The awards banquet held at the Adams Mark Hotel, in St. Louis, MO, June 21, 2003 was well attended by Selkirk Rex people. Included in the group at the table were Mary Jones (Nite Wind), Dee Weymouth (KC Curls), Trish Simmes (Az Fancyface), Chele Aughenbaugh (KalicoKitz), Sheri Lynn Henderson (Countrycurls), Debi Kallmeyer (Deenewkurl) and Donna Bass (Woolibaar). The theme of the banquet was "Christmas in July" and the centerpiece was a beautiful ornament. As happens every year, one person at each table won the centerpiece. This year, the prize was given to the person sitting with his/her back to the stage, at this table, it was Donna Bass.

There was a nice presentation for Kim Everett, who is "retiring" from the board after quite a few years in various capacities. There was also a nice tribute to Dick Gebhardt for his 50 years of service to CFA.

After a nice dinner of filet mignon, the awards were announced. Everyone walked across the stage to receive their awards, this year a nice engraved plexiglass award. It was nice to have such a large group of people who appreciate our beautiful cats attend the dinner!

CFA Annual Meeting
including Breed Council Secretaries Meeting

CFA Annual Meeting Notes and Results

The meeting started at 9:00 am on Friday, June 20, 2003 at the Adams Mark Hotel in St. Louis, MO. There were 479 delegates, representing the CFA clubs in good standing at the time of the meeting. For the Directors-At-Large election, there were 503 ballots counted. The results of the DAL election are as follows:

  • Stan Barnaby - 317 votes - elected
  • Michele Cooney - 91 votes
  • Scott Cowling - 143 votes
  • JoAnn Cummings - 320 votes - elected
  • Jody Garrison - 251 votes - elected
  • Mark Hannon - 232 votes
  • David Mare - 210 votes
  • Joan Miller - 337 votes - elected
  • Darrell Newkirk - 294 votes - elected
  • Paul Patton - 167 votes
  • Juergen Steinbrenner - 103 votes
  • Wayne Trevathan - 250 votes
  • Peter Vanwonterghem - 165 votes
  • Gary Veach - 263 votes - elected
  • Annette Wilson - 287 votes - elected

Various committees and chairpersons made their annual reports to the delegates and things moved along very quickly. At noon, Iams provided a wonderful lunch and then it was time to vote on the proposals.

To pass a proposed show rule, 2/3 of the delegates (320) would be needed to pass the rule. If only a majority passed the show rule (240), it would go to the Board of Directors in October and then they would decide to pass it or not. The vote on the various proposals went as follows:

Prenoticed Resolutions:

  1. Proposed amendment to the Constitution, having to do with insurance paying expenses for someone who slanders another: Ruled out of order.
  2. Proposed show rule to remove the need to get winners ribbons, change the number of points needed to become a Grand, allow points to accumulate at Open step: overwhelmingly FAILED. There were almost no "Yes" votes on this issue.
  3. Proposed show rule to allow Ch/Pr to transfer to Grand on Saturday of a two-day show (much like Opens can transfer to CH/PR on second day): It was felt by some that it was poorly written, but it was PASSED BY A MAJORITY, so it goes to the board with a favorable recommendation.
  4. Proposed show rule to require certain format at a show: WITHDRAWN
  5. Proposed show rule to change payment for clerks depending on size of show and license status of clerk: overwhelmingly FAILED.
  6. Proposed show rule to require show managers to inform public of correct behavior: FAILED
  7. Proposed show rule concerning numerous cancellations of judging contracts by one club: FAILED
  8. Proposed show rule limiting to contracting for judges to no more than 3 years in advance: overwhelmingly FAILED.
  9. Proposed show rule concerning who sends in judging contracts and when: overwhelmingly FAILED
  10. Proposed show rule concerning number of rings counted National and regional points: WITHDRAWN
  11. Proposed non-show rule concerning committee for International show: FAILED

Resolutions From the Floor

  • Proposed show rule that judges should be paid by status at the time of the show, not when they signed the contract: CARRIED
  • Proposed non-show rule concerning who is on breeders listing: FAILED - already taken care of by board
  • Proposed show rule concerning wording on who gets which page of judging contract: FAILED
  • Proposed show rule to clean up wording so shelters that are allowed to bring in cats to adopt don't bring in kittens younger than 4 months: FAILED - show rule committee will discuss.

Breed Council Secretaries Meeting

During the breed council secretaries meeting with the Board of Directors on Thursday June, 19, 2003 at the St. Louis Annual, the subject of the Cats Ancestors Tracking Service (CATS) came up. After a certain amount of discussion, I summarized the discussion and received concurrence from the Board on the following summary. The Board asked me to publish this summary to the breed council secretaries list.

There is some discussion on this also on Page 74 of the April Almanac.

Observation:
Article IX (International) Section c. of the CFA Constitution says:
"Registration rules for cats in the International Division shall be the same as those adopted for other regions described in Article VIII of this Constitution."

CATS is not a registry!
The purpose of CATS is to allow other International Division people to participate in CFA and have their cats noted in a database. Thus, such cats can be tracked by CFA without having to be registered in another association for the purposes of establishing the requisite number of generations to be able to eventually register the progeny in CFA according to our registration rules.

In addition, CFA would get the revenue for these cats.

Non-registered CATS may be listed and shown in the International Division and specific parts of North America. Listed cats cannot claim a CFA championship unless the cat is registered in CFA.

According to the CFA Constitution Article IX, Section c (See above observation), there CANNOT be special registration rules for the International Division!

The purpose of the discussion was to defuse some of the rumors and speculations about some covert "International Registry" that the Board was working on. The above CATS is what the Board is working on and is still in its preliminary stages. While the mission, purpose, and objectives of such a Cats Ancestors Tracking Service have been laid out, the operational parameters, database design, and how it interfaces with the CFA registry all have yet to be nailed down.

Norm Auspitz

Selkirk Rex Breed Council Meeting

The Selkirk Rex Breed Council met and discussed the CATS that was discussed at the earlier meeting. In addition, a couple of standard changes were suggested and discussed. These will be on the Breed Council ballot. If you want to be a member of the CFA breed council, go to http://www.cfainc.org, click on the "Exhibitors" button and find the forms page. You can down load a copy of the Breed Council application, fill it out and then send it in if you qualify. You must join by August 1, 2003 to be eligible to vote on this year's ballot.

The items discussed were:

  • Change the number of generations required for a certified pedigree to 3 from the current 5. The main reason given is that our breed is too young to need the stricter requirements of a 5 generation pedigree when bringing in a cat from another association/country.
  • Change the number of points for "color" to something other than 10. 10% of the points for judging is on color and it is felt that that is too much when color means very little in the scheme of things. The options ranged from 1 - 4 points for color. The higher number makes more sense, and the other points would be allocated as Head-32, Body-32, Coat-32 with 4 points for color, including eye color.

I DIDN'T THINK HE WAS OLD ENOUGH TO DO IT!!

Nancy McMullen

Oops! How many of us recognize THAT comment about a young male "kitten" who was allowed to run the house just a bit longer than was wise? How we hate to lock up our cute little boys so soon in their lives!

Going through my files recently I found an article from the CFA Almanac, September 2000, by Dr. Susan Little DVM. It has some information that might be amusing (and useful) for both experienced breeders and people just entering the "world of kittens".

Feline Reproduction Data:

Age at Puberty-male:7-18 months (I had cute Brit male who "did it" at 8 months)
Age at Puberty-female:6-10 months, as early as 4 months, as late as 21 months
Litter size from various sources:Average 3.7
Litter size from CFA statistics:Average 3.4,   Low 2.5(Singapora),   High 4.5 (CPSH)

Well, and then there is my Ariel who had NINE in her first litter. And there's Amelia Curlhart who thinks having 6 or 7 is nooooo problem.

More Data:

Length of estrus:Average 5.8 days   Range 2-19 days
Yoicks! have any of you had a cat in heat for 19 days straight? !!!
Pregnancy rate:73.9%
Queening rate:65.2%
Length of gestation:range 62-74 days
Length of parturition:16.1 plus or minus 14.3 hours. Average 8 hours.

That last statistic tickles my funny bone. 16.1 minus 14.3 is 1.8 hours. Amelia Curlhart has babies so fast, neither she nor I can clean them up fast enough. You can imagine what a tangled mess! But, I seem to be the only one stressed out until they are all fluffy and dry.

Obviously Amelia is the perfect Selkirk mom (even tho she doesn't look like much.) She has her babies pretty much on the day you expect her to, she doesn't mind if 10 neighbor kids stick their heads in the closet to watch, she has enough milk for everyone and all her babies are curly! This past March she even adopted a baby Exotic whose mom had no milk. She keeps her babies in the bed in the closet, doesn't move them around, wanders around calling for them when they start to explore, and at 4 months says "Enough now! You're on your own."

From the CFA list: Crossing over and thought you would all get a kick out of this dog poem. Just change the dog references to "cat"!

KENNEL BLIND
Though some folks think I am, I'm not;
Though YOU perhaps show signs,
But in us it's surely justified:
Just LOOK at our dog's lines!

They really can't be faulted,
Which is more than some can say,
And the pups WE'VE bred are perfect,
And will beat the lot, someday.

You certainly have reason
To be SLIGHTLY kennel blind;
Your dogs ARE bred from my dogs,
And there ARE no faults in mine!

But doesn't it just sicken you
to hear that Mrs. Bing
Has PUPPIES from her ghastly pair
Due later in the Spring?

You wonder that she had the NERVE
To breed from "A" and "B;"
He's crippled; and she's cowhocked;
And they surely have HD.

(You can see it in their movement,'
No matter WHAT the vet's say.
I wonder why folks waste their time
And money on an x-ray?)

Remember when her import
Beat my dog? Well, I'm no prude,
But I hear on good authority
The judge that day was stewed!

Reminds me of the dog from East
That always wins at shows
But only under judges
That the owner really knows.

And how about the dog from West
That won the other day?!
I hear the owner had THAT judge
Around her place to stay!

Exhibitors are a jealous lot
I'm sure you will agree;
They seldom have a good word
For the winner...but not me!

I never mind when beaten
By a better dog than mine;
But he's not been born--AND NEVER WILL--
AND I'M NOT KENNEL BLIND!!!!!!

FACT OR FICTION: Breed your queen days 2-5 of estrus.

by Nancy McMullen

Some breeders say yes; some say it doesn't make any difference. But, taking all those hormones into consideration, YES, the timing of breeding in the estrus cycle is important to achieve ovulation. Either too early or too late may not achieve ovulation and fertilization.

To cause ovulation you have to get your queen to make leuteinizing hormone (LH). A surge of LH occurs within 15 minutes of each breeding. The maximum LH levels are reached after 8-12 breedings. Only 50% of queens will ovulate after one breeding, but most still ovulate after at least 4 breedings. One day later the LH level returns to normal. Thus, the more times she is bred, the higher the level of LH and thus better ovulation.

If we're having trouble getting a cat pregnant, we should keep this in mind: ovulation occurs 30-50 hours after copulation (HEY, THAT's 2 DAYS!!) The eggs are viable for only 25 hours after ovulation. (So if you took her away from the male by then - no kittens.)

Some queens do not release adequate levels of LH despite repeated breedings with fertile toms, but mating her several days later during the same estrus may result in ovulation. So keep her with him for at least days 2-5.

We hear about queens needing enough progesterone for a good pregnancy. This is true. Progesterone levels rise within 24 hours and continue to go up during the first 15-25 days of the pregnancy. It stays at a certain level until day 50 and drops back to normal because it is not needed the last 10 days of the pregnancy.

SMART LITTLE EMBRYOS!

Fertilized eggs pass from the oviduct to the uterine horn by day 4 or 5. The embryos space themselves out along the uterine horns so they won't be crowded as they develop into fetuses. They may migrate from one horn to the other! Some are lost in this process. Implantation in the uterine lining occurs 10-12 days after ovulation. The rate varies from 50% to 90% depending on how many eggs are ovulated. The average litter size is reported to be 4-5 kittens. The largest litters come from queens with the most ovulations.

I had heard that Vitamin E would help a cat go into heat, however, my vet says giving vitamin E (around 100-200mg a day) will increase ovulation. It might be worth a try if you are having small litters.
